Blending engineering, gender, and photography as a social entrepreneur

When 24-year-old Jasmine Majeed graduated from university with a degree in chemical engineering, she was looking for a job, but also thinking about launching her own business. She had her own dreams and aspirations, and thought entrepreneurship would be the best way to work towards those aspirations.

Jasmine shared, “My major was chemical engineering, where you are very aware of having a social impact. We are responsible to the public, we have to help others. At the end of the day, you want to help others to live a better life.”

When her university sent her an email about DOT Jordan’s Social Innovation Journey, it caught her eye. Jasmine was interested in entrepreneurship and in social impact – and especially interested in barriers women face – but she had never combined the two.
“It seemed like something that I wanted to learn more about, so I decided to join,” she says.

Jasmine loved exploring new technology in the DOT Jordan workshop. She learned networking and presentation skills, and deepened her understanding of social entrepreneurship.

“During the Social Innovation Journey, the focus on enterprise ideation and business model canvas development helped me to become more organized and to conduct better research,” says Jasmine. “I think DOT can keep helping me develop so that I can achieve success as a social entrepreneur.”

After completing the Social Innovation Journey in Amman, Jasmine is full of daring ideas about her next step. She wants to explore her passion for filmmaking and photography as a social entrepreneur, to spotlight stories about social issues and constraints within society, and to explore human nature within the context of community impact.

“Gender equality is the big issue,” she says. “I have been affected by this and I want to help people be a bit more accepting and break the social constructs and limitations.”

Jasmine says she wants to “make the world a little bit more bearable for the next generations.” With her drive and her compassion, there’s no doubt that her ideas will lead her to create opportunities for herself and those around her.
